Range

How far will you be driving every day? Each electric vehicle has an estimated range, although that can also vary depending on how you drive, if you like to blast AC, etc. The 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5, for example, can take you up to 220 miles using only electric power. If your commute is only 25 miles away, that can get you several days’ worth of driving without worrying about the charge. Another thing to keep in mind is that EVs use regenerative braking, so you may be able to recharge as you drive.

Charging

If the range fits into your lifestyle, then you also need to consider how you’ll charge your vehicle. The Bay Area has one of the highest concentrations of EV charging stations in the country, which makes it convenient to power up whether you’re at home or on the go. Whether you own a home and can install your own charging station or your employer’s parking garage offers one, it’s important to be able to stay on top of charging your vehicle.

Cost

Price is a huge factor when considering any vehicle, and that’s also true for EVs. There are a few things to consider when it comes to the cost, though. Your EV may be eligible for a tax credit in addition to other rebate programs that vary by where you live. Some locations will offer free parking to hybrid or EV drivers, potentially saving a good chunk of change. Another cost-saving perk of driving an EV is the ability to drive in the HOV lane in many areas, saving time and money on your commute.

Maintenance

If frequent repairs and constant maintenance have you ready to buy your next vehicle, then there’s good news if you’re looking at an EV. Electric vehicles require less maintenance than internal combustion engine vehicles. There’s far less maintenance due to the lack of fluids and other components that require more upkeep.

Battery Life

Although EVs don’t need as much maintenance, you will have to eventually replace the battery. Currently, EV batteries aren’t inexpensive; that means that the more miles you put on, the closer you get to a costly repair bill. However, most EV batteries can last you up to 10 years, so if you plan to sell or trade before then, there’s nothing to worry about.
