It’s been 14 years since the first mass-produced plug-in hybrid was released in the U.S. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEVs, offer an alternative to conventional gasoline-powered vehicles with many of the benefits of a battery electric vehicle (BEV). Now, over a decade later, there are dozens of PHEVs on the market as drivers adopt fuel-saving technologies. If you’re thinking about making the switch to an electrified model, keep reading to get an idea of how PHEVs work, including driving, charging, and everything in between. more PHEV 101 A PHEV has both an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor to provide power. While the ICE requires fuel, typically gasoline, the electric motor can be charged through the battery, the ICE, or regenerative braking. Most PHEVs have the ability to use the ICE and electric motor simultaneously for the most efficiency; for example, when you accelerate, the vehicle will use the ICE for the extra boost of energy. Then, when you let off the pedal or are driving at a lower speed, the electric motor will automatically kick on for the most efficient drive. Driving a PHEV Operating a PHEV is nearly identical to an ICE vehicle with a few small differences. Many PHEVs have drive modes that allow you to choose which power source you use. Normal mode will switch between the ICE and electric motor until the battery is depleted. When you’re driving to the corner store or school drop-off, electric mode uses all-electric power with little to no fuel consumption. Other drive modes vary by vehicle for a customized driving experience. Driving range is different from vehicle to vehicle, and it can also depend on your driving style. Charging a PHEV The most efficient way to charge a PHEV is with a specialized charger that uses a wall outlet. There are options for charging at home or on the go through public charging stations, and some PHEVs utilize fast-charging capabilities. Another way to charge the vehicle is through regenerative braking, which converts kinetic energy from the engine slowing down into energy for the battery.
